Tesla Boy is a Russian Synth Pop/New Wave band formed by Anton Sevidov, Dima Midborn and Poko Cox in late 2008.  Their new single, ‘Fantasy’ (released 05/22/12 on Gorby Regan Records) is equal parts retro synth, catchy pop and modern sensibility.  The dance floor friendly track clocks in at just under four minutes, but set it to loop while driving late at night with the moonroof open and you will forget all your troubles.   While Tesla Boy’s nostalgic sound is something we have heard before, there are few who do it better.

Thanks to digital world, I managed to catch up with frontman Anton Sevidov in Moscow, and chat about the music and the future of the group.

Crossfadr: Tesla Boy has been in the game since 2008, and are now reaching out to the US market. How did the three of you meet and when did you start making music together?

Anton: I launched  the Tesla Boy project in the summer 2008. I had a certain quantity of songs which lied idle. Then I decided that it was time to bring together a live group and  start  playing concerts. We recorded the first tracks and in a couple of months the largest part of the youngsters nationwide were aware of us.

Crossfadr: America it usually looking inward when it comes to pop, what is the market like in Russia where you reside? Do you ever perform in Russian?

Anton: For us it was a complete surprise that Russians began to listen to our music, Moreover, we have a lot of concerts in Russia. One of the most recent happened at the heart of Siberia, and it takes more than 4 hours to get  there bу air, it’s almost like from New York to LA. And it is almost beyond our understanding same as for you.

Crossfadr: The Tesla Boy sound is very 80’s pop revival, but with a modern approach. Who are your influences, old and new?

Anton: Cerrone, George Benson’s 20/20 vision, Bowie’s Let’s Dance, Larry Levan, The Police. If we talking about something new it could be – Daft Punk, Ice Cube, Fred Falke, Dj Mehdi.

Crossfadr: Does the band have any US tour planned?

Anton: We have plans for several shows in July/August, and our first tour is in the fall.

Crossfadr: What can we expect from Tesla Boy in the future?

Anton: We hope that The Tesla Boy will become the Russian group you will love and recognize as somewhat familiar, and it will add something new and joyful to your life
